>New freelancing for newspapers challengePosted: September 20, 2007 | |
>I know it’s been a while since I offered a challenge, but here it is: Let’s all study our Sunday papers this weekend and count the freelance articles. Make a list, noting the sections, types of article and whether the same byline appears more than once. And of course tell us what paper you’re reading. If you have access to more than one daily, try a different paper from the one you usually read. It could be quite educational for all of us.
How do you know if it’s freelance? Staff writers are usually identified as such while freelancers get something like “special writer,” “guest contributor,” “special to the (blank),” etc. You can also look for tags at the end of the story, where they might say, “Jennifer Smith is a freelance writer from Paducah” or something like that.
I’m going to do it. Let’s meet back here next week and compare notes. In a random drawing, one of you will be awarded a free copy of my Freelancing for Newspapers book.
