>Errors will ruin your chances

>I received an e-mail last week from a man who wants to write for newspapers and worried about his chances in the current market. Unfortunately his short message had two major grammatical errors, and I had to tell him his chances were nil unless he got a grip on his grammar. With so many people trying to freelance, including many staff writers who have lost their jobs, our queries have to be perfect. If editors find problems with subject-verb agreement, it’s instead of its, or misspellings, they’re not going to ask for your story. So please, proofread like crazy. Let it rest for a while, then read it again. Whether it’s online or on paper makes no difference. We all make mistakes, but let’s keep them to ourselves.
